The Brightest Star
by Jace Daniel (b. 1969)
Long ago in heavens highest, there was a star, it was not biased,
Shined above, the states to Europe, China, Turkey, Australia dry,
Pilots, night, flying craft, aviating fore and aft,
Sailors too, on boat and raft, o’er darkest waters guided by,
The star above, it would not die,
It was the brightest in the sky.Intelligent, a star of grace, diplomacy, a gentle face,
Nurturing relationships, quality, not a lie,
Generous, kindness beams, mentoring to all extremes,
All good things, they were her themes, money it could never buy,
The star above, it would not die,
It was the brightest in the sky.Other stars, her surrounded, drawn to her, safe and grounded,
Every color, shape and size, young and old, no severed tie,
Always fair, took no fave, but there was one she called her brave,
Legacy, her gift to leave, for the world on her goodbye,
The star above, it would not die,
It was the brightest in the sky.As she dimmed, she made him vow, told him it was his turn now,
To shine above, as had she, for time had come for her to die,
One last kiss, he watched her fall, horizon lit, it was her call,
Now he shines, the gift she left, for the world on her goodbye,
The star above, it will not die,
It is the brightest in the sky.
For Mike.
