I just watched Helvetica, a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design, and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of this 50-year-old typeface as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives.

Hits the spot. Go queue it up. And try this.

This week my maternal grandmother threw me an email regarding this post, saying that she already had Helvetica in her Netflix queue. I was almost positive it would be impossible to think of something cuter than Granny on Netflix until she informed me that she had immediately rushed over to her Netflix queue and bounced Helvetica to the top. Now THAT is beyond cute.

Just when I thought the degree of grandmotherly cuteness had reached its limit, I got an email. This just in today:

    Hi Jace

Now that I have seen and heard the praise of the typeface “Helvetica,” I feel compelled to set it up as my default font. I note that 14 (shown here) is preferred, while 12 appears better in Geneva. However, I may be surprised to see it in print. I found the film interesting to watch.

    Love you,
