Had a hang with Jon Mattox at NAMM last month, and he shared a lick inspired by Steve Gadd’s recording on Ricky Lee Jones’ “Chuck E’s In Love”. Jon took the first half of this linear pattern and created a really killer groove out of it. Above is the transcription of the said groove and the original Gadd pattern; below is a recording Jon laid down to demonstrate the groove at various tempos. Note the variations explored after the last rR, played on toms.
