Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I revisited this one last night, and woke up this morning with it on my mind. I suspect I was dreaming about it.

Great story. Awesome script. Killer flick, and even better the second time.

And Kate Winslet rocks.

Anyway,

Imagine a technology and medical service that allows you to arbitrarily choose to have certain memories erased from your consciousness. A bad relationship or a painful loss of a pet are a couple of reasons a person would choose to explore such a service.

The erasing procedure would require that you go to sleep for the night, with your brain being monitored by technicians, who throughout your night’s sleep mechanically locate these memories in your brain and selectively remove them.

Now, imagine that you’ve signed up for the procedure, choosing to erase memories of your estranged girlfriend. You’re now asleep in bed, hooked up to monitoring equipment, with two technicians doing their thing. You’re dreaming, yet you know you’re dreaming. And you can’t wake up.

OK?

Now, imagine that while you’re sleeping, you decide that you want to back out of the deal. You now do not want to forget your girlfriend. But since you’re asleep, it’s impossible for you to communicate this to the technicians. They are going about their business, erasing your memories of her one by one.

What do you do?

Move her to a different place in your consciousness. A secret place in your mind that the technicians don’t know about.

Then again, some things are better left forgotten.

if you haven’t, read the last scene of the original script. it ends on a very different, but great, note.
