This morning on a routine Sunday trip to the bluff, I got sidetracked by a sign pointing to an open house for the studio of local artist Elma Beck. These types of random moments are what inspiration is made of.
Elma has an absolutely KILLER pad at probably the most desirable place in San Pedro, if not Southern California. It’s the last house on the bluff just before Jap’s Cove. Elma was gracious enough to take me on a personal tour of her beautiful home, showing me some of her pieces. She also did a short demonstration for me and several others in her studio, talking shop, going over her techniques. She paints with oils, about ten paintings a year, or approximately one per month. One tip she gave us was the product she uses to cover her oils to prevent drying: Kirkland Food Wrap from Costco. It’s much more effective than saran wrap, as it doesn’t cling to itself.
Who needs to drive up to Carmel to hang out with fine artists when they’re in your backyard? I love hanging out with these people. Every moment with them breathes new life into my desire to create my own stuff. And the more elderly they are, the more I have to look forward to. Elma, you rock!!!
