Today is the day. Our book is out.
Just winged on over to Borders in Torrance and grabbed a few copies. Did a quick skim and already found a few gems worth noting:
Can my words have footnotes, please? –Amy Harbottle
Hope my obituary spells “debonair” correctly. –Gregg Easterbrook
I’m just here for the beer. –Alex Vournas
Black Latina. Slave ship stopped everywhere. –Veronica Chambers
Maybe you had to be there. –Roy Blount Jr.
It’s a classic read. I was about to scan my page, but stopped. There’s nothing like the real thing. So I’ll just see you in person on Page 123. As a fellow author pointed out, that puts me fourteen pages ahead of Stephen Colbert’s 137. I’m open to the idea that that’s good for something. I also made the Index, falling under the Storytelling category. With Elizabeth Gilbert!
I’m currently somewhat preoccupied with the fact that 123 is composed of the divisors of the thematic 6. A perfect number.
And at the risk of alienating myself from most of the human race, I will never be able to fall asleep tonight until I admit that I can’t help from noticing that 123 is found in the Fibonacci Sequence.
Down to the final hours before the release of our book tonight at midnight. A few things going on in the next couple weeks:
The book’s available at your favorite bookstore Tuesday, February 5th, as well as on Amazon. On Thursday, February 7th, editors Larry and Rachel will be live on NPR’s Talk of the Nation at 3:30PM EST. For the mathematically challenged on the West Coast, that’d be 12:30PM. Tune in for lunch.
LAists,
This weekend’s all about New York (congrats to the NY Giants, btw), with the kick-off book release bash going down Saturday night in Manhattan. Then the party moves out here, hitting Los Angeles on February 13th, next Wednesday. This LA stop will be a mashup between SMITH Magazine and True Media, which just launched a project called True Hookup Confessions. The two ideas fused together make for a naturally racy match.
The LA party’s open to the public, so cruise on out to Santa Monica for some refreshing hump day distraction. A little rush hour traffic never killed anybody important. The flyer:
The party moves up to San Francisco after LA. If you’re up north, check out the schedule at the Six-Word Memoirs site. That should be a good one, with the Twitter folks being right there in the neighborhood.
With saxophonist Walter Smith III after February 2nd’s jazz gig. Great times. The real thing. We eventually ended up in a joke telling session out in the backyard. Walter has a few doozies that I won’t repeat here.
Enjoyed another underground jazz rager here in town last night. Morrie Louden played with a few cats at our little secret studio here in San Pedro. It’s a perfect place to hear live music. Acoustics are killin, great vibe. It’s kinda like Inside the Actor’s Studio, but with bad-ass musicians.
Last night’s quartet consisted once again of Joel Taylor on drums, and featured saxophonist Walter Smith III from Houston TX. A real treat. After the gig, our entourage walked back over to Dain’s for food, drink, jokes, and more live music in the living room.

So I just crawled under the house again to re-run some Ethernet cabling to the Media Closet. This time, however, I was alone, without a buddy around to hear me yelling for help should such a perilous situation arise.
Or so I thought. This is what I saw as I emerged from the depths.

“There is a fifth dimension. Beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow. Between science and superstition. And it lies between the pit of Man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge.”
— Rod Serling
