We hit LACMA yesterday and checked out the Lynda and Stewart Resnick Exhibition Pavilion. I somehow found myself captivated by what looked to be a chronological display of the history of the men’s three-piece suit, and the camera came out.
The first several suits below are in chronological order and are meant to illustrate the actual evolution of the suit over time. Notice how ensembles became more practical over the years, such as swapping out the frocks for shorter waistcoats (better for riding horses), the birth of “trousers” that replaced the conventional not-exactly-perfect-for-hunting breeches, and, of course, pockets. Lots of pockets.
The garments at the end are not part of the chronological display; they were just there for showcasing fabrics and such.
