Just heard a great story via my buddy Ray Garraud. There are probably a few ways to tell it. Here’s my version:
A guy was walking by a construction site when he saw three men at work. Curious, he went up to the first worker.
“What are you doing?” the guy asked.
“Laying bricks, of course. I’m a bricklayer. It’s what I do.”
“Cool,” the guy said. “Looking good.”
The guy then went up to the second worker.
“What are you doing?” the guy asked.
“Making a living, of course. I’ve got a wife at home. Kids to feed. Mortgage to pay. Gotta bring home the bacon. It’s what I do.”
“Right on,” the guy said. “Keep it up.”
The guy then went up to the third worker.
“What are you doing?” the guy asked.
“I’m building a cathedral. A beautiful cathedral. Something bigger than me. Something that will provide joy and wonder for all who experience it. Long after I’m gone.”
A great lesson in perspective. What are you doing?
