According to the ASCAP, the most frequently played Christmas song is, appropriately enough, “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)”.
It was written in 1944 by Mel Torme and Bob Wells. Nat King Cole recorded the original version of the song in 1946; it became a major pop hit and is generally regarded as the definitive rendition.
While nobody will ever be able to lay it down quite like Nat, for my money it’ll always be about Johnny Mathis’ version from the ’60s.
