Kauai, 07.01.1983

Grampa Cecil was a gadgety guy. When we had our Albao reunion on Kauai in 1983, he had a tape recorder with him the whole time.

Here’s an excerpt from the recorded hour of arrival, which happened to be 22 years ago today. This clip captures us running into Uncle Eddie. It’s amazing. Hearing Uncle Eddie’s oh-so-familiar voice greet me in the manner only he could sends a chill down my spine. You can hear his playful sense of humor; seems he had a joke for everything. It also reminds us of his fondness for Aloha shirts, which I’m beginning to realize now that I inherit from him.

I miss those guys.

The Three Golfers

Three Golfers

A minister, a doctor, and an engineer are playing golf one morning. They approach the 2nd hole and have to stop due to four golfers near the green who seem to be taking forever.

“We’ve been standing here for almost half an hour. What’s up with these guys?” exclaims the engineer.

“They certainly are displaying a considerable amount of ineptitude,” comments the doctor.

“Here comes the groundskeeper,” says the minister. “Let’s have a word with him…”

“…excuse me sir, what seems to be the problem with the fellows up ahead? They seem to be taking quite a long while to get through this hole.”

“Oh that,” replies the groundskeeper. “Those four guys are the firemen. You see, last year our clubhouse caught fire and nearly burned to the ground. Luckily, there were four firefighters nearby enjoying a few sodas between nines. They saved our clubhouse, but they all lost their vision in the blaze and were completely blinded. We felt so bad about it that we let them play whenever they want, for as long as they want to, for the rest of their lives.”

“That’s unfortunate,” says the minister. “I’ll be sure to keep them in my prayers.”

“Good idea,” agrees the doctor. “And I’ll put a call into my opthamologist buddy on Monday. Perhaps there’s something he can do for them.”

The engineer takes another practice swing with his 8-iron and says, “Why can’t these guys play at night?”

Time and Measurement Trivia

“Fortnight” is a contraction of “fourteen nights.” In the US “two weeks” is more commonly used.

A bathometer is an instrument for indicating the depth of the sea beneath a moving vessel.
