Brief Interviews with Hideous Men is a collection of 23 short stories by David Foster Wallace. Each story is presented as a transcript of an interview with a male subject, with the questions omitted and rendered merely as “Q”. Given only the answers to the interviewer’s omitted questions, the reader is left to fill in the details herself, discovering things between the lines as the story unfolds.
Interview #20 from the collection is probably the darkest of the bunch. One of the most disturbingly beautiful pieces I’ve ever read. The more you want to turn away from what you realize you’re reading, the more you’re compelled to continue on and finish what you started.
