‘Orange is the New Black’ by Piper Kerman

piperMy buddy Piper and her hub Larry Smith contacted me this week to let me know she was out west from NYC to do a reading from her new book ‘Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison’ at Book Soup in West Hollywood. In her memoir, Piper tells us the story of her 15-month stint in a federal prison after being involved in a drug smuggling and money laundering scheme ten years earlier.

After outlining the events that got her into such a mess, Piper takes us on a tour of B-Dorm, a community of colorful, eccentric, vividly drawn women. Their stories raise issues of friendship and family, mental illness, the odd cliques and codes of behavior, the role of religion, the uneasy relationship between prisoner and jailer, and the almost complete lack of guidance for life after prison. Check it out!

“I loved this book, to a depth and degree that caught me by surprise.” — Elizabeth Gilbert, author of ‘Eat, Pray, Love’

It’s always grand to hang with Larry and the Pipebomb. We met at the NYC release party of the first Six-Word Memoirs book in 2008.
