623 East 68th Street, New York, NY

The other day over Cuban food we were polling people in the restaurant to see if anybody could recall the street address in the classic sitcom, I Love Lucy. It’d be impossible for me to eat Cuban food in New York and not think of Ricky Ricardo.

We finally looked it up this week and learned that in that fictional world, the Ricardos and Mertzes live at 623 East 68th Street in Manhattan. That would theoretically be the north side of the street; if you look out their window, you’d be looking south.

Matt just pointed out that 68th Street ends at the 500 block. That puts our friends right in the middle of the East River.

I used to visit a good friend who lived in a high-rise on E. 68th Street in New York. When I asked her where the address of 623 would be she laughed and said; Non-Such! You must be referring to I LOVE LUCY. My friend’s high-rise condo was so close to the East River that we could view it from her living room window. So I suspect she was right and have since discovered that the address was made-up. In Star Trek OTS, the address of agent GARY SEVEN is located on the 800 block. Star Trek is associated with DESILU PRODUCTIONS which makes a lot of sense to me. People have a tendency to forget that these are all staged productions with false names and addresses. I am guilty of the same mistake.
New York City is a wonderful place! And even though I live in the exclusive resort community of Las Colinas in Texas (Dallas County), I would love to have a condo in New York. The people, the places, the convienience, and all the diversified shopping markets that are quickly assessible and businesses available cannot be beat. New Yorkers, for the most part, walk everywhere and don’t fret as much over sky high gas prices. Unlike here in Texas where we must drive or spend half the day on foot. I envy New Yorkers.

Funny, I just searched the entire internet looking for 623 E 68th Street in New York. I was just watching I Love Lucy because i have all of the dvds for the show and all the other shows she has ever done. I must say that for how dedicated I am for her I should have known but it never hurts to try. I would love to have met her, but she died a few months before i was born. I was born in January of 88. To, I know Vivian Vance and William Frawley (a.k.a. the Mertz’s) died in the early 70’s. And Desi died in 82′. But Mrs. Lucille Ball’s Kids, Desi Jr. and Lucille Arnaz are still alive. I know they like to keep to them selves and such but I wish them the best and still thanks for allowing the shows to still be seen on t.v. I’m sure its a good income. I’m just another fan. A 21 year old who’s been watching these shows since I was 2. Lucy was a wonderful lady and Desi was too up until a certain point but then he eased out of it and what not. Tho Vivian (Ethal) she struggled to with depression and i can’t believe what Lucy did for that lady. So sad. But that just goes to show how wonderful Lucy is….not WAS BUT IS.

that funny i was just watchin i love lucy (my favorite show) when lucy gave her address so i decided to google it. well i guess it was to be expected that it was a fake address, although it would have been nice if had it been an actual place. imagine living at the address the the ricardos’ always mentioned.

Dana, for the record William Frawley died in March of 1966. Vivian Vance died in August of 1979, and Desi Arnaz died in December of 1986.

Mistakes I can see, but I don’t understand why people just make things up and post them as facts.

The “I Love Lucy ” show will live forever. I am in my 60’s and I watch their show every day. I will miss all those characters of that show.

i too have always been a big fan of the show as was my mom. to me , the acting in the shows is what made them last..forever. it was all so believable, that they “went” to hollywood , europe, fla. and “moved” to conn. when you read the background of the show, to know how “ethel & fred” disliked each other so much, & lucy & ricky didn’t even speak to each other during the ending shows, says so much about what true “actors” they all were. difficult to replace the four of them..RIP

I am a 65 year old male. Even though I was quite young, I vividly remember our family gathering around the TV set every Monday night at 9:00 PM back in the fifties to watch the original airings of “I Love Lucy.” Every time I see the opening of a Lucy episode I think to myself, “I’ve seen this one sooooo many times,” but I find myself laughing as much as I did when I watched the original airing of it on TV. There has never been, and never will be, a TV show to compare with “I Love Lucy.”
