A long-lost cousin found

alison

It’s been an incredible eleven months. Last April I received an email from a guy in New York who found me on a Google search, claiming had some news to tell me. I’ll skip all the amazing details here and get to the conclusion: his wife, Alison, is my first cousin. Our dads are brothers.

I finally got out to New York to visit Ali, her hub Matt, and their two-year-old boy, Alexander. Lots of stories to tell there.

The whole experience was beautifully surreal, as if we’ve known each other the whole time. Ali and I spent most of the week just tripping out on the situation. She commented that I feel more like a brother than a cousin. I feel the same.

We spent some time catching up on what we’ve been up to the last few decades, from concerts to film tastes to school memories to childhood toys. There was one topic that came up which I would consider a candidate for Conversation of the Week. From what I remember, it went something like this:

Me: “So what was childhood like?

Ali: “I was bored all the time.”

Me: “I know the feeling. So did you play with Barbies or what?”

Ali: “Yeah, I had some of those.”

Me: “Did you ever have one of those Easy-Bake Ovens?”

Ali: “I actually did. Yeah.”

Me: “I always wished I had a big sister with one of those things.”

Ali: “Why?”

Me: “So I could eat all the brownies.”
